Chapter 2

Udyam Registration

11 min 50 XP

Registering on the Udyam portal

Udyam registration is free, online and paperless, available to any eligible micro/small/medium enterprise. It produces a permanent Udyam Registration Number (URN) and an e-certificate with a QR code.

What you need

The only mandatory requirement is the proprietor's/authorised signatory's Aadhaar number, linked with PAN and GSTIN (for entities where GST applies). Investment and turnover data are auto-fetched from income-tax and GST systems, so no documents need uploading.

The process

Visit the Udyam Registration portal, enter Aadhaar and validate by OTP, fill enterprise details (type, address, bank, activity NIC codes), and submit. The certificate is issued instantly or shortly after, with no fee. Beware of fraudulent third-party sites that charge for the free service.

Updating and migration

Existing Udyog Aadhaar holders were required to migrate to Udyam. Enterprises must keep their registration updated; PAN and GST linkage allows the system to refresh classification automatically each year.
