Chapter 2
FSSAI Registration Process
Applying through FoSCoS
FSSAI applications are made online on the FoSCoS (Food Safety Compliance System) portal. The FBO selects the right category (Basic/State/Central), fills Form A (registration) or Form B (licence), and uploads documents.
Documents typically required
Common documents include photo ID and address proof of the proprietor/partners/directors, proof of premises (rent agreement/utility bill), a food-category list, a layout/plan for manufacturers, a water-test report where applicable, and a Food Safety Management System (FSMS) plan for licences.
Validity and renewal
A registration or licence can be issued for 1 to 5 years, at the FBO's choice (with fees scaling accordingly). It must be renewed before expiry; late renewal attracts a per-day penalty, and lapse means operating illegally. Modifications (new products, address) require updating the licence.
After approval
Once granted, display the certificate and 14-digit number prominently. Manufacturers and larger operators should implement their FSMS, train food handlers, and prepare for periodic inspections and audits.
